5.  If the  tree  falls w hilst you  are  sawing:

■  

Interrupt  the  back cut  if  the tree  does fall 

in the wrong  direction  or  leans  back and 

traps the  chain  saw.  To  open the cut and 

fell the tree,  drive  in w edges in the  direc­

tion  o f the  required  felling  line.

■  

Immediately  pull  the  chain  saw  from  the 

cut,  switch  it o ff and  put  it  down.

■   W alk away  in the  direction  o f the  escape 

route.

■   W atch out for falling  branches and twigs.

6.  If the tree rem ains standing, drive wedges into 

the  back  cut  in  order  to  cause  it  to  fall  in  a 

controlled way.

7.  At  the  end  o f  sawing  work,  im mediately  re­

move  your ear defenders and  listen  out  for si- 

gnals or warning  calls.

Bear the following  points in  mind  during this work:

■  

Support the  chain  saw  against  the  tree  trunk 

during  the  work.

■  

In  the  preliminary  phase,  leave  larger,  down- 

w ard-poin ting  branches  that  are  supporting 
the  tree  (21).

■  

Cut  o ff sm alle r branches with  one  cut.

■  

Pay attention to  branches under tension,  and 

saw through these  from  underneath  upwards 

in  order  to  avoid  the  chain  saw  becoming 

trapped  (21).

■  

Do  not  saw  o ff  free-hanging  branches  from 
underneath.

■  

Only  experienced  or  trained  people  should 
make  plunge  cuts,  longitudinal  cuts  and  bo- 
ring  cuts.

C r o s s - c u t tin g

Bear the  following  poin ts in  mind  during this work:

■   W hen working on a slope,  alw ays stand  uphill 

from the tree trunk,  because  it could  roll away 

(25).

■  

Guide  the  chain  saw  so  that  there  is  no  part 

o f y ou r body in the extended sweep arc o f the 
saw  chain.

■  

Position the  bum per spike directly adja cent to 

the  cut  edge  and  allow the  chain  saw to  pivot 
about this point.  Do  not exert  any  pressure  at 
the  end  o f the  cut.

■  

Make  sure  that the  saw chain  does not touch 

the  ground.

■   At the end o f the cut, wait for the saw chain to 

come  to  a  halt  before  you  remove  the  chain 
saw.

■   A lw ays switch  o ff the  m otor o f the  chain  saw 

before  you  move to the  next tree.

The entire length o f the tree trunk is in contact with

the  ground:

Saw  through  the  tree  trunk  from  above,  wi- 

thout cutting  into  the  ground  (22).

Tree  trunk  is  lying  raised  at  one  end:

and  the  wood  splintering,  first  saw  through 

1/3  o f  the  trunk  diam eter  from  below,  then 

saw through the rem ainder from above,  down 
as far as the  cut  made  from  underneath  (23).

Tree  trunk  is  lying  raised  at  both  ends:

and  the  wood  splintering,  first  saw  through 

1/3  o f  the  trunk  diam eter  from  above,  then 

saw through the  remainder from  underneath,

Only use wedges made  from wood,  plas- 

tic or aluminium.

Having  no  escape  route  represents  a 

danger o f serious and  even fatal  injuries! 

Do  not  start  the  felling  work  until  you 

are sure there is an  unobstructed escape 

route  away  from  the tree  to  be  felled.

Uncontrolled  falling  o f a  tree  can  lead  to 

extrem ely serious and even fatal  injuries! 

Do  not carry out any felling w ork in w indy 

conditions.

Uncontrolled  falling trees can  lead  to  ex- 

trem ely  serious and  even  fatal  injuries!

In  order to guarantee controlled  felling  of 

a  tree,  leave  a  bridge  between  the  un- 
dercut  and  the  back  cut.  The  length  of 

this bridge  should  be  approx.  1/10 o f the 
trunk diameter.
