Sec tion 6 states ter ms for distribution of such executables.

When a “wor k that uses the Libr ar y” uses material from a header file that is par t of the Libr ar y, the objec t 
code for the wor k may be a derivative wor k of the Libr ar y even though the source code is not. 
Whether this is tr ue is especially significant if the wor k can be linked without the Libr ar y, or if the wor k is 
itself a libr ar y. The threshold for this to be tr ue is not precisely defined by law.

If such an objec t f ile uses only nume r ical par amete r s , dat a s tr uc tur e layou t s and accessor s , and small 
macros and small inline func tions (ten lines or less in leng th), then the use of the objec t file is unrestric ted, 
regardless of whether it is legally a derivative wor k . (Executables containing this objec t code plus por tions of 
the Libr ar y will still fall under Sec tion 6.)

Other wise, if the wor k is a derivative of the Libr ar y, you may distribute the objec t code for the wor k under 
the ter ms of Sec tion 6.
Any executables containing that wor k also fall under Sec tion 6 , whether or not they are linked direc tly with 
the Libr ar y itself.

  As an exception to the Sec tions above, you may also combine or link a “wor k that uses the Libr ar y” with the 

Libr ar y to produce a wor k containing por tions of the Libr ar y, and distribute that wor k under ter ms of your 
choice, provided that the ter ms per mit modification of the wor k for the customer’s own use and rever se 
engineering for debugging such modifications.

You must give prominent notice with each copy of the wor k that the Libr ar y is used in it and that the Libr ar y 
and its use are covered by this License. You must supply a copy of this License. If the wor k during execution 
displays copyright notices, you must include the copyright notice for the Libr ar y among them, as well as a 
reference direc ting the user to the copy of this License. Also, you must do one of these things:

a)  Accompany the wor k with the complete cor responding machine-readable source code for the Libr ar y 

including whatever changes were used in the wor k (which must be distributed under Sec tions 1 and 2 
above); and, if the wor k is an executable linked with the Libr ar y, with the complete machine-readable 
“wor k that uses the Libr ar y”, as objec t code and/or source code, so that the user can modif y the Libr ar y 
and then relink to produce a modified executable containing the modified Libr ar y. (It is under s tood 
that the user who changes the contents of definitions files in the Libr ar y will not necessarily be able to 
recompile the application to use the modified definitions.)

b)  Use a suitable shared libr ar y mechanism for linking with the Libr ar y. A suitable mechanism is one that 

(1) uses at r un time a copy of the libr ar y already present on the user’s computer system, r ather than 
copying libr ar y func tions into the executable, and (2) will oper ate proper ly with a modified ver sion 
of the libr ar y, if the user installs one, as long as the modified ver sion is inter face-compatible with the 
ver sion that the wor k was made with.

c)  Accompany the wor k wi th a wr i t ten of fer, valid for at lea s t thr ee year s , to give the same user the 

mater ials specif ied in Subsec tion 6a , above , for a char ge no mor e than the cos t of per for ming this 
distribution.

d)  If distribution of the wor k is made by of fering access to copy from a designated place, of fer equivalent 

access to copy the above specified materials from the same place.

e)  Verif y that the user has already received a copy of these materials or that you have already sent this user 

a copy.

For an executable, the required for m of the “wor k that uses the libr ar y” must include any data and utility 
progr ams needed for reproducing the executable from it. However, as a special exception, the materials to 
be distributed need not include any thing that is nor mally distributed (in either source or binar y for m) with 
the major components (compiler, ker nel, and so on) of the oper ating system on which the executable r uns, 
unless that component itself accompanies the executable.

It may happen that this requirement contr adic ts the license restric tions of other proprietar y libr aries that do 
not nor mally accompany the oper ating system. Such a contr adic tion means you cannot use both them and 
the Libr ar y together in an executable that you distribute.

  You may place libr ar y facilities that are a wor k based on the Libr ar y side-by-side in a single libr ar y together 

with other libr ar y facilities not covered by this License, and distribute such a combined libr ar y, provided that 
the separ ate dis tr ibution of the wor k based on the Libr ar y and of the other libr ar y facilities is other wise 
per mit ted, and provided that you do these two things:

a)  Accompany the combined libr ar y with a copy of the same wor k based on the Libr ar y, uncombined with 

any other libr ar y facilities. This must be distributed under the ter ms of the Sec tions above.

b)  Give  prominent  notice  with  the  combined  libr ar y  of  the  fac t  that  par t  of  it  is  a  wor k  based  on  the 

Libr ar y, and explaining where to find the accompanying uncombined for m of the same wor k .
