To protec t each distributor, we want to make it ver y clear that there is no war r anty for the free libr ar y. Also, 
if the libr ar y is modified by someone else and passed on, the recipients should k now that what they have is 
not the original ver sion, so that the original author’s reputation will not be af fec ted by problems that might be 
introduced by other s.

Finally, sof tware patents pose a constant threat to the existence of any free progr am. We wish to make sure that 
a company cannot ef fec tively restric t the user s of a free progr am by obtaining a restric tive license from a patent 
holder. Therefore, we insist that any patent license obtained for a ver sion of the libr ar y must be consistent with 
the full freedom of use specified in this license.

Mos t GNU sof t ware, including some libr ar ies, is covered by the ordinar y GNU Gener al Public License. This 
license, the GNU Lesser Gener al Public License, applies to cer tain designated libr ar ies, and is quite dif ferent 
from the ordinar y Gener al Public License. We use this license for cer tain libr ar ies in order to per mit link ing 
those libr aries into non-free progr ams. 

When a progr am is linked with a libr ar y, whether statically or using a shared libr ar y, the combination of the two 
is legally speak ing a combined wor k , a der ivative of the or iginal libr ar y. The ordinar y Gener al Public License 
therefore per mits such link ing only if the entire combination fits its cr iter ia of freedom. The Lesser Gener al 
Public License per mits more lax criteria for linking other code with the libr ar y.

We call this license the “Lesser” Gener al Public License because it does Less to protec t the user’s freedom than 
the ordinar y Gener al Public License. It also provides other free sof tware developer s Less of an advantage over 
competing non-free progr ams. These disadvantages are the reason we use the ordinar y Gener al Public License 
for many libr aries. However, the Lesser license provides advantages in cer tain special circumstances.

For example, on r are occasions, there may be a special need to encour age the widest possible use of a cer tain 
libr ar y, so that it becomes a de-fac to standard. To achieve this, non-free progr ams must be allowed to use the 
libr ar y. A more frequent case is that a free libr ar y does the same job as widely used non-free libr aries. In this 
case, there is lit tle to gain by limiting the free libr ar y to free sof tware only, so we use the Lesser Gener al Public 
License.

In other cases, per mission to use a par ticular libr ar y in non-free progr ams enables a greater number of people 
to use a large body of free sof tware. For example, per mission to use the GNU C Libr ar y in non-free progr ams 
enables many more people to use the whole GNU oper ating sys tem, as well as its var iant , the GNU/Linux 
oper ating system.

Although the Lesser Gener al Public License is Less protec tive of the user s’ freedom, it does ensure that the user 
of a progr am that is linked with the Libr ar y has the freedom and the wherewithal to r un that progr am using a 
modified ver sion of the Libr ar y.

The precise ter ms and conditions for copying, dis tr ibution and modification follow. Pay close at tention to the 
dif ference between a “wor k based on the libr ar y” and a “wor k that uses the libr ar y”. The for mer contains code 
derived from the libr ar y, whereas the lat ter must be combined with the libr ar y in order to r un.
