Device Manager
in Se arch to launch it. Look in the Disk Drive s se ction and, if ne ce ssary, click the
Plus (+) icon to vie w the full list of de vice s. If you’re unce rtain that your drive is liste d, safe ly unplug it and
the n re conne ct it. The e ntry that change s is your Se agate hard drive .

A: Windows De vice Manage r usually provide s information about failure s with pe riphe rals. While the De vice
Manage r can assist with trouble shooting most proble ms, it may not display the e xact cause or provide a
pre cise solution.
An unusual icon ne xt to the hard drive can re ve al a proble m. For e xample , inste ad of the normal icon base d
on the type of de vice , it has an e xclamation point, que stion mark or an X. Right-click this icon and the n
choose Properties. The Ge ne ral tab provide s a pote ntial re ason why the de vice is not working as e xpe cte d.

Problem: The hard drive icon does not appear on my desktop
Q: Is your Finde r configure d to hide hard drive s on the de sktop?
A: Go to Finde r and the n che ck Preferences | G eneral tab | Show these items on the desktop. Confirm that
Hard Disks is se le cte d.
Q: Is your hard drive mounting in the ope rating syste m?
A: Ope n Disk Utility at G o | Utilities | Disk Utility. If the hard drive is liste d in the le ft-hand column, che ck
your Finde r pre fe re nce s to se e why it is not displaye d on the de sktop (re vie w the que stion above ). If it is
graye d out, it is not mounte d. Click on the Mount button in Disk Utility.
