3.  Projecting  pin  (18/2)  defines the  correct  posi- 

tion  o f  the  quick-tension  chain  wheel.  Make 

sure  it  is  correctly  seated.

STORAGE

T horoughly  clean  the  chain  saw  after  each  use.
Store  it  in  a  dry,  lockable  place  out  o f the  reach
o f children.

Carry  out  the  following  jo b s   before  intervals  in

w ork  lasting  for  longer than  30  days:

1.  Switch  o ff  the  machine  and  disconnect  the 

mains  plug.

2.  Unscrew the  oil  tank cap.

3.  Empty the  oil tank.

4.  Fill with  some  engine  oil.

5.  Run the  chain  saw with  this  for a  short time  in 

order to  flush  the  oil  lines and  oil  pump.

6.  Remove  the saw chain  and  guide  rail,  clean  it 

and  spray  it with  rust-proofing  oil.

7.  Thoroughly  clean  the  chain  saw  and  store  it 

in  a  dry  place.

TECHNIQUE

Take  the  following  measures  before  starting  fel- 
ling work.

■  

Make  sure  that  no  other  people,  anim als  or 

obje cts are  in  the  danger area.

■  

The  safe  distance  from  other  w orkpla ces  or 
obje cts should  be  at  least  2% tree  lengths.

■   W atch  out  for power lines and  other people's 

property.  If necessary,  notify  the  power sup- 
ply  company  or the  property  owner.

■  

Judge  the  falling  direction  o f the tree.

Factors  influencing  the  falling  direction  o f the 

tree:

■  

Natural  lean  o f the  tree

■  

Height  o f the  tree

■  

Branches growing  on  one  side

■  

Level  ground  or  slope

■   Asym m etrical  growth,  wood  damage

■   W ind  direction  and  wind  speed

■  

Snow  load

■   When working  on  a  slope,  always w ork uphill 

o f the tree  to  be  felled.

■  

Establish  y ou r escape  route  in  advance,  and 

make  sure  that there  are  no  obstacle s  in  the 

way.  The  escape  route  should  be at an  angle 
o f approx.  45°  backwards  from  the  falling  di­

rection  (19).

■  

The trunk must be free from growth,  branches 
and  foreign  bodies  (e.g.  dirt,  stones,  loose 
bark,  nails,  staples,  wire,  etc.).

Make  two  undercuts and  one  back cut  in  order to 
fell  a tree.

1.  During  back  cuts  and  cross-cuts,  place  the 

bum per  spike  firm ly  against  the  wood  to  be 
cut.

2.  Saw  the  first  undercut  (20/C)  horizontally, 

then  the  second  undercut  at  an  angle  o f  at 

least  45°  from  above.  This prevents the  chain 
saw  becoming  trapped  when  you  make  the 
second  undercut.  The  undercut  must  be  as 
close  as  possible to  the  ground  and  in the  re- 
quired  felling  direction  (20/E).  The  depth  o f 

the  undercut  should  be  about  1/4  o f the  dia- 

meter o f the  trunk.

3.  Cut  the  back  cut  (20/D)  exactly  horizontally 

opposite  to  the  undercut.  The  back  cut  must 
be  made  3-5  cm  above  the  horizontal  under- 
cut.

4.  Saw  in  the  back  cut  (20/D)  sufficie ntly  deep 

so  that  a  bridge  (20/F)  o f  at  least  1/10  the 

trunk diam eter rem ains between the  undercut 

(20/C)  and  the  back  cut  (20/D).  This  bridge 
prevents  the  tree  from  twistin g  and  falling  in 

the  wrong  direction.  The  tree  should  start  to 

fall  when  the  back cut  (20/D)  approaches the 
bridge  (20/F).

Courses  in  the  use  of  chain  saw s  and 

techniq ues  for  felling  trees  are  regularly 

held  by various forestry  organisations.

Inadequate  technical  knowledge  can  re­

sult  in  serious and  even  fatal  injuries! 

Only trained and  experienced people are 

allowed  to  fell  trees and  lop  branches.

wood!

Wood  chips  caught  up  in  the  chain  can 

lead  to  extremely  serious and  even  fatal 
injuries!

Remove  loose  chips  and  wood  splinters 

from  the  part to  be  sawn.
